Once you're enrolled in RMP, the mechanics are easy — but a few details save you an awkward moment at the register.
Step by step
- Confirm the restaurant is authorized. Look for RMP or EBT signage, ask the staff, or check our list. Not every location of a chain participates.
- Order eligible food. Hot and ready-to-eat meals are covered. Alcohol, tobacco, and non-food items are never eligible.
- Pay with your EBT card. Swipe like a debit card and enter your PIN. The amount comes out of your SNAP balance.
- Keep your receipt. It shows your remaining balance, same as a grocery run.
What's covered — and what isn't
- Covered: hot meals, combos, and ready-to-eat food at authorized restaurants.
- Not covered: alcohol, tobacco, lottery, and non-food merchandise.
- Tips: most states don't allow EBT to cover tips — bring a little cash if you want to tip.
Your balance is shared
RMP purchases draw from the same monthly SNAP benefit as your groceries — restaurant spending reduces what's left for the store, so plan around your balance. Check it on your state EBT app or your last receipt.
If the card is declined
A decline usually means the restaurant isn't authorized, your case isn't flagged for RMP, or you're outside a participating state. Confirm eligibility with your state SNAP office and try a verified RMP restaurant.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use EBT for delivery or drive-thru?
Drive-thru generally works at authorized restaurants if your card is present for the swipe. Third-party delivery apps usually can't process EBT for RMP, though some pilots exist — check your state.
Does EBT cover the tip?
In most states, no. EBT covers the eligible food total; bring cash if you'd like to tip.
Will restaurant purchases use up my grocery benefits?
Yes. RMP draws from your single SNAP balance, so a restaurant meal leaves less for groceries that month. Track your balance in the state EBT app.
